Head and neck surgeons, also known as otolaryngologists or ENT (ear, nose, and throat) surgeons, are trained to diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of the head and neck area, including:
Surgical oncologists are surgeons who specialise in the surgical treatment of cancer. They work closely with other oncology specialists, such as medical oncologists (chemotherapy) and radiation oncologists, to provide comprehensive cancer care. For head and neck cancers, surgical oncologists perform procedures to remove tumours or cancerous tissues from the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, salivary glands, thyroid, and other structures in the head and neck region. They also perform reconstructive surgeries to help restore function and appearance after cancer treatment.
Surgical oncologists are trained in advanced surgical techniques, including minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgeries, to ensure the precise tumour removal while preserving healthy tissues and minimising complications. Both head and neck surgeons and surgical oncologists play crucial roles in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of head and neck conditions and cancers. They often work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as pathologists, radiologists, and oncologists, to provide multidisciplinary care for patients.
